New England picked up a 24-21 win over Philadelphia in preseason action Saturday night, rallying late to improve to 1-0-1 on the summer. Head coach Mike Vrabel rested his starters again, using the game to evaluate depth across his roster.
Vrabel wasn’t the coach who ended up dominating headlines from the night, though.
That distinction belonged to Jen Welter, the former Arizona Cardinals coaching intern who appeared on the Patriots broadcast for an in-game interview.
The clip spread fast once cameras caught the moment. “This is one of the wildest live interviews you will ever see on live television,” one account wrote online. “Bonkers.”
Welter’s Trailblazing Career Set Up A Surprising Return

Welter holds a permanent place in NFL history. She joined the Cardinals in 2015 as an assistant coaching intern, becoming the first woman to hold any coaching position in league history.
She only stayed with Arizona through that year’s training camp and preseason. However, her hire opened doors that reshaped how teams think about coaching staff.
Welter kept coaching after her Cardinals stint, working as a defensive specialist for the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football in 2019. She’s spent the years since focused on growing women’s flag football, a sport that’s expanded rapidly and is now on track to be included in the 2028 Olympics.
That work brought her to Gillette Stadium on Saturday. Welter has no affiliation with either the Patriots or Eagles, and the broadcast brought her on specifically to promote flag football’s growth. As the interview unfolded, though, viewers online began speculating that something about her energy on camera seemed a little different from what was expected, sparking plenty of chatter across social media.
New England’s Depth Pieces Impressed Despite The Distraction

The interview didn’t take away from what New England accomplished on the field. Both Tommy DeVito and Behren Morton moved the offense effectively at quarterback.
The defense had a rougher outing overall, but still did enough to close out the win. Welter’s appearance arrived during the same week the Eagles and Patriots ran joint practices together in Foxborough, sessions that had already produced their own headlines. That included a heated sideline scrum involving Vrabel and Eagles pass rusher Jalyx Hunt.
New England closes out its preseason slate Thursday against the Browns. After resting starters through the first two games, the expectation is that Vrabel will finally get his top players an extended run. Fans should get their clearest look yet at what the Patriots plan to bring into the 2026 regular season.
