Sophie Cunningham Drops Major Hint About WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s Future
Sophie Cunningham hints at Cathy Engelbert ouster.
Sophie Cunningham said that transgender women and biological male athletes should be barred from female sports and locker rooms. Consequently, her remarks sparked massive cultural backlash, arena protests, political debates, and league-wide polarization.
Cunningham asserted that young female athletes should not have to compete against biological men or share locker rooms with them. Afterward, she doubled down on her stance while insisting she harbored no hatred toward the transgender community.
Despite that, Cunningham finds herself being booed by opposing fan bases. As a result of the interview, opposing groups staged rallies, with some fans wearing chromosome-themed t-shirts to support her and others protesting.

The intense league-wide debate surrounding transgender eligibility policies in professional basketball has reached the highest executive levels.
During a recent interview with USA Today, Indiana Fever star guard Sophie Cunningham sparked widespread media attention. Specifically, she openly suggested that WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert could potentially face replacement at the end of the year.
“You do have to have a person in power who is bold, who is confident, who wants the best for the players and not maybe for themselves all the time,” Cunningham told USA Today.
“So I do feel like, as a whole, that could be a position that’s maybe open at the end of the year, but that’s not my call.”
Engelbert, in her seventh season as commissioner, has been the subject of criticism from players. Sophie Cunningham said Engelbert has “done a lot of good things,” but said the WNBA needs a commissioner who supports players being “trailblazers of what women’s leagues can look like.”
“With where our league is trying to go, I feel like you just want someone who also wants that,” Cunningham said. “That’s just a hard position to be in, in her shoes, us as players — we always want more, more, more because we see how good it can be.”

Sophie Cunningham is now villain number one when she goes on the road with the Fever. Cunningham was heavily booed during an Indiana Fever road game against the Toronto Tempo. However, she did not feed into it.
Cunningham dismissed the negative reception, publicly praising the Canadian crowd’s energy.
The hostile reception stemmed from comments Cunningham made during a July interview with ESPN about transgender individuals. Fans consistently boo Cunningham whenever she touches the basketball or appears on the arena screen.
Spectators waved transgender pride flags and displayed signs inside the stadium reading “Trans rights are human rights” and labeling her a “transphobe.” The signs and booing do not show that they are affecting her gameplay.
