CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said Americans still believe President Donald Trump would currently be doing a better job than former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Although Trump’s polling numbers are currently underwater, he is leading Harris 45% to 43% on the question of “who’d be doing a better job as president,” according to a CNN/SSRS poll. Public polling has repeatedly shown that Trump is performing better than Democrats when it comes to handling their top issues, indicating that the party is not appealing to Americans, Enten said.

“This is the key nugget here. It’s not just about regretting that vote, it’s literally saying who’d be doing the better job right now and Trump continues to score a higher percentage of the vote than Kamala Harris. This looks a heck of a lot like the election result, we have just seen this in poll after poll after poll,” Enten said. “Despite the fact that Trump’s favorable ratings aren’t too hot to trot, when he’s matched up against who he was matched up with in 2024, he still, across the polls, scores a higher percentage than Kamala Harris.”

Enten showed that the president holds an 8-point lead, 40% to 32%, against congressional Democrats on the question of who Americans “trust more” to handle “main U.S. problems,” according to a survey conducted by ABC News, The Washington Post and Ipsos.

“When you match Donald Trump against actual competition, Donald Trump comes out ahead. Look at this! 40% [for Trump], [for] congressional Democrats, 32% … But the bottom line is, when you look at Donald Trump in a vacuum, it’s one thing,” Enten said. “But when you actually match him up against folks in the real world, all of a sudden his numbers look considerably better. And when you match him up against his main competition at this point, Democrats in Congress, he is more trusted on the main problems facing the United States right now.”

“In fact, it’s not even close. It’s an 8-point advantage, which in this politics, well that’s a wide ocean,” the data reporter continued.

Enten also presented the results of a Reuters/Ipsos poll which found that the GOP has a significant advantage among registered voters when it comes to the economy and immigration. The party holds a 19-point lead against Democrats on immigration and a 9-point lead on the economy, according to the poll.

“The GOP crushes the Democrats, look at that. That’s a 19-point edge. My goodness gracious, you rarely see leads like that in politics,” Enten said.

The reporter further warned Democrats that these numbers should be a “major wake up call,” suggesting that they need to focus on their messaging to Americans.

A survey conducted by ABC News and The Washington Post found that 37% of Americans trust Trump to do a “better job handling the country’s problems,” while 30% trust Democrats. It further found that 7 in 10 Americans believe that Democrats are “out of touch” with the public, while 6 in 10 said the same about Trump.

Democrats’ favorability ratings reached its lowest marks in decades. A CNN/SSRS poll from March found that Democrats had a 29% favorability rating, the lowest rating since 1992.
