The six-time Olympic gold medalist is opening up about how his assassination changed her life forever. Kirk was fatally shot during a rally he was hosting at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Around 3,000 people were present at the event when the shooting happened. Nobody else was gunned down.
Van Dyken is now opening up about how witnessing that moment deeply affected her personal life. Taking to Instagram on Monday, Van Dyken said: ‘I wanted to tell you something. September 10th, 2025, completely changed my life.’
She said she witnessed a man who enjoyed sharing ideas and debating others get killed in front of a large crowd. Amy Van Dyken said she quickly reached out to friends who also knew Charlie Kirk.
‘I watched a man who had ideas and liked to debate others on their ideas be assassinated in front of us. I have friends who also knew Charlie Kirk, and I called and said, ‘Is everything okay?’ The only thing I got back was: ‘Lots of blood, please pray.’

Charlie Kirk’s shooting in cold blood changed something in Amy Van Dyken. She said that moment pushed her to change how she lived. Van Dyken said, “From that moment on, I stopped being a lukewarm Christian.”
She is now attending church every Sunday and reading her Bible every day. Van Dyken also listens to worship music instead of secular music.
Dyken explained that these changes helped her feel calmer. She said she is now less anxious and less angry. The former swimmer stated she has been quiet about this and wanted fans to understand why. “I just wanted to let you guys know what has been going on in my life since I’ve been so quiet,” she wrote. “That day completely changed my life forever.”
Amy Van Dyken also spoke to Kirk’s family. “I just want to say to Charlie, Erika, and their entire family: I’m so sorry for your loss.” She thanked Kirk for standing firm in what he believed and added, “Please be kind to yourself. Please be kind to others. God bless every one of you.”
