The Seattle Seahawks won the opening night game, but they couldn’t be too happy after Sam Darnold got injured.
Darnold suffered a terrifying injury scare that threatened to derail the team’s entire 2026 season. Consequently, everyone anticipated the worst-case scenario. The injury occurred on just the fifth play of the season when Darnold was sacked from behind by Dre’Mont Jones.
The quarterback limped heavily off the field and was initially examined inside the medical tent before heading to the locker room. Darnold would soon be ruled out for the game as Drew Lock took over.

Sam Darnold avoided a severe, season-altering hip fracture, according to head coach Mike Macdonald, who said initial testing showed “great news.”
First, Macdonald addressed the quarterback’s sudden exit during a halftime interview. He emphasized the team’s resilience and collective mindset, stating, “We got to pick him up. We got faith in Drew [Lock] and he’s settled into the game now so we should be able to execute our game plan.”
Following the team’s hard-fought 13-10 victory, the head coach offered a more detailed update during his postgame press conference. The relief was all over his face as he announced, With Sam, we got some great news back. Let’s just say it’s good news right now… Still, our thoughts and prayers are with Sam. We love him.”
In addition, when reporters asked if the quarterback completely avoided a season-ending structural injury, Macdonald confirmed, “At this point, we were able to rule out a fracture. So, there’s some more tests to be done, so that’s what I’m saying, [that] it’s positive.

What Lies Ahead For The QB

Darnold is still scheduled to undergo an MRI on Thursday to evaluate any potential tissue or ligament damage. However, the initial prognosis remains highly optimistic. Doctors must rule out severe ligament strains before clearing him for physical contact.
The upcoming schedule looks significantly more manageable with their star player under center. Furthermore, Seattle won’t play again until September 20th, so it’s like a mini bye week for Darnold and the team.
In the meantime, Drew Lock stepped up in emergency duty after entering the game with 7:29 remaining in the first quarter. Lock successfully engineered a second late scoring drive, setting up a 26-yard field goal by Jason Myers to secure a dramatic 13-10 victory.
