Nicole Briscoe and Ryan Smith laughing

Johnny Furphy completed a dunk in Summer League that was so resounding, it broke SportsCenter.

The Indiana Pacers sophomore went coast-to-coast for a one-handed dunk against the Chicago Bulls on Monday night, bringing the ball all the way back before jamming it over an unfortunate Noa Essengue.

While the play is likely to be the dunk of the summer, it’s also been immortalized in meme history, given the look on the rookie’s face as he hung in midair while getting posterized.

Nicole Briscoe and Ryan Smith tried to cover the highlight during ‘SportsCenter’ but could not get past Essengue’s face, losing their composure on live television, with Smith asking whether the image was real and struggling to get his words out through the tears.

“This is hard to do right now because I just want to laugh,” Briscoe admitted as she tried to switch to the WNBA. They later confirmed that the image was not photoshopped and was the genuine artifact.

Johnny Furphy May Have Already Ruined Noa Essengue’s Career

Noa Essengue found himself on the wrong end of the poster but had a good outing, scoring 21 points. Johnny Furphy scored 15 points, adding six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks.

The dunk, which had Tyrese Haliburton raving on social media, is what he will be remembered for.

Haliburton took to X to post, “Johnny MF Furphy sheeeeesh,” after watching his teammate bring the house down.

This could be a career-defining moment for both players. But we hope Essengue can bounce back from this, given the many calls for him to retire and the claims that it’s over for him in the NBA following his embarrassing expression.

We’re willing to bet he’d pay top dollar for this to be scrubbed off the internet.
