For the second straight year, the 49ers have issues with Christian McCaffrey heading into their season opener.
The San Francisco 49ers’ star running back was said to be healthy and fully expected to play in the upcoming 2026 NFL season opener. Initially, public concern was sparked during the August training camp when McCaffrey sat out team drills for two weeks.
That was due to what the team officially described as “muscle tightness.” Consequently, the media and fantasy football managers panicked, fueling speculation that he might miss Week 1.
However, both head coach Kyle Shanahan and leading NFL insiders quickly cleared the air. They clarified that the rest was purely precautionary and not contract-related.

An early practice update from Melbourne was enough to jolt 49ers fans and fantasy managers. Christian McCaffrey was not taking part in drills during the portion of Monday’s session that was open to reporters.

Meanwhile, Nick Bosa was also kept off those same early snaps while George Kittle was seen working. The report was first delivered by NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco from Australia. In addition, McCaffrey had spoken with reporters before the session and then stayed off to the side.
No official participation designation was immediately required because of the international game schedule. Consequently, the absence was left open to interpretation with Thursday’s Rams kickoff only days away.

After missing most of the previous year due to severe calf and Achilles injuries, many questioned if he could ever return to his elite form. However, McCaffrey silenced critics by playing in all 17 regular-season games.
Initially, the 49ers intended to protect McCaffrey from overwork. However, injuries to other key offensive stars forced them to rely heavily on him instead. Consequently, he ended up leading the NFL in total touches and completely dominating the field.
First, Christian McCaffrey proved his durability on the ground by logging 311 carries for 1,202 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.
In addition, he acted as an elite slot receiver, hauling in 102 receptions for 924 yards and adding 7 receiving touchdowns.
