Dan Campbell made the call official on Monday. The Lions’ defense suffered another hit before Week 3. They are losing another defensive back for the year after the Thursday night mess in Buffalo. Avonte Maddox needs season-ending surgery on the foot injury he suffered against the Bills.
He was filling in at safety because Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph opened the year on the PUP list. Detroit is 1-1. The secondary already looked thin before this update landed.

Campbell did not dress it up.
“That hurts a little bit. Maddox is a good player for us,” he said when the surgery news came out
The injury happened early in the second quarter of a 41-31 loss, after a collision with teammate Chuck Clark in the end zone.
Maddox limped off, then left on a cart. He later came out of the locker room on crutches with his left foot in a boot. Campbell sounded uneasy that night.
“Maddox is pretty tough, so when he doesn’t come back, that makes me nervous,” he said after the game.
Clark owned the contact.
“I’m so sorry,” he told Maddox, coming off the field. “It’s a violent game, things happen, friendly fire.”
The Lions still had to play Josh Allen with one less body in the back end. Allen finished with five total touchdowns.

This was not a depth-chart footnote. Maddox started the first two games next to Chuck Clark and posted early production, including seven tackles and two pass breakups in Week 1.
He is a Detroit kid who came home after years in Philadelphia. The Lions signed him in 2025 and brought him back on another one-year deal this spring. A former Pitt defensive back and Super Bowl champion with the Eagles was supposed to stabilize the middle of a patched secondary. Instead, the year ends in September.
Campbell already looked wrecked after Buffalo. The TNF cameras did him no favors either. Detroit has been collecting season-ending news since spring, including a receiver tearing an ACL at OTAs. This one lands on the defense that just gave up 41.
The Lions get extra rest before the next game. They do not get Maddox back. The surgery closes his 2026, and the safety room stays short until Branch and Joseph are cleared to work.
