Romo was arrested in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 23, 2026, on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI). He was also cited for unsafe passing, possessing an open container of alcohol in a moving vehicle, and refusing to take a chemical breath test.
Deputies reported that Romo had red, glassy eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of alcohol. They also found small bottles of alcohol and an open container inside his vehicle and backpack. Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests and repeatedly asked to call a lawyer before declining to submit to a preliminary breath test.
He paid the ultimate price when CBS placed him on leave.

The network has completed its assignments for the 2026 season. J.J. Watt has been elevated to the primary booth alongside play-by-play voice Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson.
“JJ Watt will join Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson as CBS Sports’ lead NFL team during Tony Romo’s absence,” CBS said. ” We will release the remainder of our NFL ON CBS roster at a later date.”
This arrangement covers the top games while the previous lead color commentator remains away from the role. Officials indicated that the situation continues to evolve, with no set timeline for any potential return.
Depth across the announcing ranks has allowed the network to fill positions smoothly during the transition period.
