Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell made an announcement on Sunday. Veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is stepping away from the team. Retirement looks likely this time.
Bridgewater had missed the last two practices. Campbell shared the news during his press conference. The coach spoke with clear emotion about the longtime quarterback.
“Teddy Bridgewater is going to step away,” Campbell said. “I’ve known Teddy a long time and, man, the human being is unbelievable — certainly the player.”

Campbell praised Bridgewater’s character and preparation.
“Everything that he’s about, the type of teammate he is, the way that he prepares, [he] always played the game up here, and had a huge heart. He’s going to be missed.”
The coach recalled their shared history. Bridgewater stepped in for an injured Drew Brees in New Orleans years ago. He helped the team win five straight games during that stretch.
Bridgewater’s biggest concern was letting the Lions down.
“That’s the type of guy he is,” Campbell said. “And he’s not.”
Campbell believes this departure will stick. Bridgewater has stepped away before. He previously retired, coached his high school alma mater to a state title, and returned to the NFL multiple times.

The Lions now need a backup behind starter Jared Goff. Undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer is the only other quarterback on the roster. Campbell said the team likes Altmyer’s progress but wants more experience.
“We’re going to add somebody,” Campbell said. “We’d like to add a veteran quarterback. We’re hoping maybe something happens tomorrow.”
Bridgewater signed a one-year deal with Detroit this offseason. He spent time with the Lions in previous years and also played for Tampa Bay last season. His career includes 65 starts and steady leadership in multiple locker rooms.
