The Los Angeles Lakers faced the Dallas Mavericks on Friday at Crypto.com Arena in a game that carried special significance for Luka Doncic. The game marked a return for Doncic to face his former team and former teammates.

Despite the sentiment, Doncic remained locked in. He wasted no time reminding his old teammates of his skill. By the end of the first quarter, Doncic executed multiple pump fakes against Klay Thompson, drained a three-pointer, and even added a cheeky play by hitting Thompson on the backside.

Last offseason, Klay Thompson chose to sign with the Dallas Mavericks over the Los Angeles Lakers to play alongside Luka. He had even turned down a lucrative offer from the Lakers.

However, his stint alongside Luka was short-lived, as the Mavericks traded Doncic in February. Since that trade, Thompson and the Mavericks have struggled to find consistency, even after acquiring Anthony Davis in exchange for Luka. Davis has appeared in only 14 of 52 games. Friday marked his return from a left calf strain.

When you look at Luka & the way he’s playing, he’s one of the best players in the world. If you show one pitch & you show it too many times, he’s going to be able to take advantage of that. Hopefully we can through different defenses to throw him off, but he’s seen everything…He’s playing the game at a very high level,” Kidd said.
