Colin Kaepernick is an American civil rights activist and former professional football quarterback. He only played six seasons in the league before it all came crashing down.
Kaepernick’s departure from the NFL and the loss of his football career were caused by a single event. The catalyst for the end of Kaepernick’s career began during the 2016 NFL preseason, when he chose to sit and later kneel during the Anthem.
Kaepernick stated he was protesting systemic racism, social injustice, and police brutality against Black people and people of color. The protest ignited a massive, polarizing national debate. It drew fierce criticism from a large segment of football fans, corporate sponsors, and politicians.
He did not know it at the time, but he would never play in the NFL after that season.

Whitlock raised an eyebrow while discussing a massive, looming comeback. The visual presented Colin Kaepernick in a red jersey under the banner of a completed transfer.
The path illustrated moved from the University of Nevada, through the San Francisco 49ers, and past a symbolic black power fist before ending at Stanford. However, the entire presentation was clearly designed as a parody rather than an actual roster move.

Kaepernick began the 2012 season as the backup to Alex Smith, who had successfully led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship game the previous year. However, in Week 10, Smith suffered a severe concussion.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh chose to start the second-year Kaepernick. Colin Kaepernick’s postseason debut is widely considered one of the greatest quarterback performances in NFL history.
In his very first playoff game, Kaepernick completely dismantled the Packers. He set an all-time NFL single-game record for rushing yards by a quarterback, running for 181 yards and 2 touchdowns. Facing a 17-point deficit on the road, Kaepernick showed poised pocket leadership, completing 16 of 21 passes to lead a dramatic 28–24 comeback win.
Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans pitted Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers against his brother John Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens. Following the stadium power outage, Kaepernick engineered a furious, thrilling comeback. However, the Ravens would hold on in the end.
Following the 2016 season, the San Francisco 49ers hired a new front office and coaching staff led by Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan indicated that Kaepernick did not fit his specific offensive scheme, and the organization made it clear they planned to release him.
Ultimately, Colin Kaepernick lost his career because his peaceful protest transformed him from a professional athlete into a polarizing civil rights figure.
