The Indiana Fever guard has been the talk of the 2026 season for various reasons. It has been due to a mix of political controversy, on-court altercations, business moves, and comments on league leadership.
First and foremost, Cunningham sparked a massive national conversation last month. She publicly opposed the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports. She stated her desire to “protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Subsequently, she doubled down on these comments to reporters, calling her stance “common sense.” In addition to the political discourse, Cunningham found herself at the center of an intense on-court physical incident.
During an August 8 game against the Chicago Sky, DiJonai Carrington fouled Cunningham hard from behind, hitting her in the head and neck. It led to a review that upgraded the play to a Flagrant 2 and resulted in Carrington’s ejection.

The Indiana Fever guard loves to show off her dance moves. She has been caught on camera many times twerking. This time around, she wanted to send a message. She was shown dancing energetically inside a hotel room.
Cunningham was sporting a white halter top without any bra underneath. She had on some short shorts.

Sophie Cunningham has experienced a visible statistical decline. Her scoring average dropped to 6.9 points over recent games. Initially, she averaged 9.4 points per game. However, her offensive production has significantly slowed down.
Because of that, she is spending less time on the court. In two of the last three games, she has seen 15 minutes or less on the court. Even in the past 10 games, she has scored 5 points or fewer.
Meanwhile, heavy off-court political distractions continue to surround her. Protests and massive media attention have intensified. The off-court issues are seemingly messing with her overall game.
