Truth be told, she became popular not because of her scoring but due to being the de facto enforcer of the Fever. Plus, there’s that thing she said about transgender athletes.
Despite her popularity, it’s unclear if her team will re-sign her to a lengthy contract once this season ends. She’s on a one-year deal worth $665,000. If Indiana lets Cunningham walk, she’ll have plenty of options in the offseason.

It’s hard to envision Cunningham donning another jersey next year. She fits right well with the Fever. And most of her famous memes happened while donning the Fever jersey.
But due to her sudden online success, several teams may be enticed to sign her not just for her game but for her growing popularity as well.

First is the New York Liberty. This NY team needs an occasional starter and a 6th man. She could become the enforcer Sabrina Ionescu needs nightly.
Second would be the Washington Mystics. While not a team in title contention, Sophie Cunningham could be the veteran the Mystics need. They are currently the youngest team in the WNBA.
Third would be the Dallas Wings. Paige Bueckers is a bucket. However, the team needs a defensive cog who can wait on the wings to shoot threes. Cunningham will fill that role perfectly.
The fourth team would be the Phoenix Mercury. This will be a reunion for Cunningham, as the Mercury was the one that selected her in 2019. Her toughness would be welcomed there.
And the fifth team would have to be the Minnesota Lynx. Cunningham won’t be asked to do a ton, but it’s her best pathway to win a WNBA championship. The Lynx are the best team in the league right now.
Cunningham Unsure Of Her Future In Indiana

If you ask Cunningham about her future in Indiana, even she is unsure of that narrative.
“It’s tough because I came off an injury, and I haven’t been in front of any teams. I had a lot going on this offseason. I was fully cleared, they had all the doctors, they had the numbers, and everything. But if you don’t get in front of these people, it’s like, ‘Hey, are you actually good?” Cunningham said in a previous interview.
“I’m not even gonna lie to you, though, it’s a little, kind of, frustrating. Because I’m just at the point in my career where I just want to win. And so I’m not going to put my ego in front of things. And I know it is a business, but I just think I’m wired a little differently. I don’t know. I just want to win,” she added.
This would be an interesting offseason for the Fever star.
