Lala’s devastating collision with a parked car in NCIS: Origins continues to fuel fan theories about her potential survival, but a new update seems to have finally confirmed her fate after weeks of back-and-forth speculation. In fact, the NCIS: Origins season 1 finale itself suggests that the newest update on Lala Dominguez’s fate could prove much more meaningful than others.
Regardless of whether Lala’s death is right for the story, no fans really want to see Mariel Molino leave the NCIS: Origins cast. The issue is that Gibbs’ narration foreshadows Lala’s death to the point that her survival would feel like an inconsistency. Nevertheless, CBS’ newest update suggests what fans can expect from Lala’s prognosis in NCIS: Origins season 2.
NCIS: Origins Season 2 Premiere’s Case Hints At Lala’s Survival
Her Death Should Impact The Main Cast Much Differently
It’s been a long and whiplash-inducing summer for fans trying to predict Lala’s fate in NCIS: Origins. To keep things short, suffice to say that Mariel Molino’s post about being called to set was considered proof of Lala’s survival until a co-showrunner listed out numerous reasons she might still be dead. The most obvious was Lala appearing in the hospital.
All of these theories are technically still in play, but CBS might have tipped their hand accidentally when TVLine reported the logline for the NCIS: Origins season 2 premiere. The logline makes it clear that Gibbs and Franks are still investigating cases while waiting to hear about Lala’s prognosis, the implied mystery of which at least suggests the hospital possibility:
“Gibbs and Franks investigate the disappearance of a young Marine connected to a mysterious compound with a charismatic leader, and Lala’s fate is revealed.”
It seems odd that Gibbs would be back at work so quickly if Lala were dead. After their last encounter, Gibbs should think he’s still under investigation for the murder of Pedro Hernandez. If Lala Dominguez dies, nobody is around to tell him otherwise except for Lara Macy, who would presumably be sticking around to attend her good friend’s funeral.
But that doesn’t work either because we already know from Lara Macy’s NCIS season 6 storyline that Gibbs doesn’t learn the truth about the Pedro case for nearly two decades. Lala could give him another narrative to ease his fears in the meantime if she survives, but it’s harder to justify his swift return to work without any such reassurance.

Why It Makes Sense For Lala To Survive NCIS: Origins Season 1 Finale’s Car Wreck
It’s Never Easy To Write Off Such A Beloved Character
Before getting too far, it’s important to note that Lala surviving the NCIS: Origins season 1 finale doesn’t mean she’ll survive all of season 2. Lala could easily hang on for one or two episodes before ultimately succumbing to her injuries, but that’s a can of worms easier left unopened. For this discussion, we’re looking at her survival prospects overall.
And, to put it bluntly, it’s hard to take death in the NCIS franchise seriously with NCIS: Tony & Ziva’s premiere right around the corner. It’s a reminder that NCIS has used fake-out deaths as plot points since before Lala was even conceptualized as a character. More importantly, they do this when there’s good reason to bring a character back.
The reason for bringing Lala back largely centers around Gibbs and Lala’s NCIS: Origins romance, which Molino herself has voiced hopes to see more of in NCIS: Origins season 2. With Leroy’s revenge plot concluded and his dalliance with Diane not even beginning to blossom yet, Gibbs’ romance with Lala is his only significant throughline heading into the next season.
It puts Lala in an odd position. Her survival renders entire swathes of Gibbs’ season 1 narration meaningless, yet killing Lala too soon could also leave Gibbs in desperate need of a new character arc. That said, there is a middle ground, and it serves as a reasonable prediction of what to expect from Lala if her survival is confirmed.
What To Expect From Lala’s Arc In NCIS: Origins Season 2
Her Death Isn’t Required To Make Her Sacrifice Important
Not unlike how many fans assumed the death of Mike Franks’ brother in NCIS: Origins after his first appearance, finding out that Lala survived is welcome news if it means reconciliation with the character most closely associated with her. How that will happen with the Franks brothers remains to be seen, but Lala’s path forward is quite a bit clearer.
Given the grave nature of Gibbs’ narration and his refusal to tell Lala’s story until now, it can be assumed that Lala’s crash will have a significant impact on Leroy whether Dominguez survives or not. At this point, Gibbs doesn’t know that she crashed on the way to tell him that she single-handedly secured his position in the free world.
But the Gibbs narrating this story would more likely have that context, so the meaning behind his narration is subject to change with new reveals. Leroy might just feel guilty that he pursued a woman he met while another nearly sacrificed her life for him, which arguably isn’t even the most irrational thought his perpetually guilt-ridden brain has ever had.
It’s discomforting to think Lala defied death just for her next arc to be a love triangle with Diane, but it goes deeper. Since we also know Lala kept her involvement in Macy dropping Gibbs’ case a secret for at least 18 years, that means something compelled her to hide the very information she intended to deliver before the crash.
The likeliest explanation is that Franks or somebody else close to both Gibbs and Lala convinced her not to tell the truth to spare Leroy’s guilt. But even if this isn’t the case, NCIS: Origins can’t pursue a Lala survival story without examining how the crash (and the sacrifice she nearly made) will affect her relationship with Gibbs.
