Indiana Fever fans held their breath on Saturday after guard Sophie Cunningham went down awkwardly during their preseason game against the Atlanta Dream — sparking fears of a serious injury just weeks before the WNBA season tips off.
The incident occurred in the third quarter when Cunningham leapt for a rebound, only to land awkwardly and roll her right ankle, grimacing in pain as she hit the hardwood.
Tension rippled through the arena as Cunningham stayed down for several moments, clutching her leg while Fever medical staff rushed to her side.
Though clearly in discomfort, Cunningham eventually managed to walk off the court under her own power, giving a small wave to the concerned fans as she exited — but she did not return to the game.
Fever coach Stephanie White delivers positive update
After the final buzzer, Fever head coach Stephanie White addressed the injury in her postgame press conference, trying to ease concerns.
According to Fever beat reporter Scott Agness, who shared updates on X (formerly Twitter), White reported that Cunningham herself had assured the team she was “okay” despite the scare.
“She said she’s alright,” White confirmed, adding that the move to keep Cunningham out for the remainder of the game was purely precautionary.
While no official medical diagnosis has been released yet, the initial signs are encouraging for the Fever, who are counting on Cunningham’s experience and grit to play a pivotal role this season.
Sophie Cunningham left the preseason finale in the 3Q with a right ankle injury. Coach Steph White said postgame that Sophie told her “I’ll be fine” while in the cold tub.
That’s a positive one week from opening day.

Key piece for a rebuilding Fever team
Cunningham, who signed with Indiana this offseason after several strong years with the Phoenix Mercury, has been seen as a crucial addition to a young Fever roster looking to climb the WNBA standings.
Her blend of defensive toughness, perimeter shooting, and veteran leadership is expected to complement No. 1 overall pick Caitlin Clark and rising star Aliyah Boston in what fans hope will be a breakout season.
Any extended absence for Cunningham would have been a significant setback — but for now, the Fever and their supporters are breathing a collective sigh of relief.
Still cautious moving forward
Despite the initial optimism, it’s likely that Cunningham will undergo further evaluation in the coming days to ensure there are no lingering issues.
With the WNBA regular season just around the corner, the Fever are expected to proceed cautiously with their new guard, prioritizing her long-term health over rushing her back into preseason action.
For Cunningham herself, the injury scare seems to have only reinforced her determination.
Cameras captured her back on the bench after the incident, cheering on her teammates and flashing a thumbs-up to fans — a sight that surely lifted spirits across Indiana.
