Confirm – Jaxson Dart Is Officially Done
Jaxson Dart’s 2026 season is officially over after further medical testing revealed his knee injury was significantly worse than the New York Giants initially feared.
The Giants quarterback suffered the injury during Monday night’s 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams when he dropped back to pass on New York’s opening drive.
Dart was hit heavily while releasing the ball and became trapped between two Rams defenders, causing his knee to bend awkwardly.
Although the second-year quarterback was able to walk off the field, subsequent testing revealed extensive damage.
Giants’ Initial Optimism Disappears After MRI
Immediately after the game, Giants head coach John Harbaugh expressed hope that Dart had avoided the worst possible outcome.
Early diagnostic tests appeared encouraging enough for Harbaugh to suggest the injury might not be devastating.
That optimism did not last.
A follow-up MRI on Tuesday revealed substantially more damage than originally expected, with reports describing the injury as “worse than anticipated.”
The new diagnosis put surgery firmly on the table and ultimately ended Dart’s 2026 campaign.

Dart Will Undergo Knee Surgery
Medical testing confirmed damage to Dart’s MCL, PCL and meniscus.
The positive news is that his ACL remained completely intact.
However, the meniscus damage emerged as the biggest concern and was serious enough that surgery became necessary.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport later provided the definitive update, reporting that Dart is expected to undergo knee surgery.
“Jaxson Dart is expected to have knee surgery that will lead to a full recovery,” Rapoport reported.
Despite the expectation that Dart can recover fully, the procedure means he will miss the remainder of the 2026 NFL season.
Brutal Ending to Promising Start
The injury represents a major blow for both Dart and the Giants.
The young quarterback entered the season with a significant role in New York’s offense and had quickly become one of the team’s most important players.
But his night against Los Angeles ended almost immediately.
The injury occurred on the Giants’ opening possession, leaving New York without its starting quarterback for the rest of the game.
What initially appeared to be a potentially manageable knee issue quickly became a season-ending problem after the MRI results arrived.
The timing makes the setback especially difficult for a second-year quarterback still establishing himself as the franchise’s starter.
Jameis Winston Takes Over
With Dart officially sidelined, the Giants will now turn to veteran quarterback Jameis Winston.
Harbaugh has publicly backed Winston and said the organization has “absolute faith” in his ability to run the offense moving forward.
That confidence will be important as New York attempts to regroup following the loss of its starting quarterback.
Winston is now positioned to lead the offense for the remainder of Dart’s absence.
Giants Also Face Quarterback Depth Problem
Dart’s injury creates another issue beyond the starting role.
The Giants are now thin at quarterback behind Winston.
Sophomore Jake Haener is currently the only other healthy quarterback on the roster, meaning New York must also address its depth chart as the season continues.
That leaves the organization balancing two immediate priorities: preparing Winston to take over as the starter and ensuring it has enough healthy quarterbacks behind him.
For Dart, meanwhile, the focus now shifts entirely toward surgery and rehabilitation.
The intact ACL offers an important positive in an otherwise brutal diagnosis, and the expectation remains that he can make a full recovery.
But for 2026, his season is finished.
What began as cautious optimism after Monday night’s game has now turned into confirmation that the Giants will have to move forward without their young starting quarterback.
