As the search for missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie continues many have been left wondering what the motive was for her abduction.
The mom of Today show star Savannah Guthrie vanished from her home in Tucson, Arizona in the early hours of February 1 and has not been seen since. Now former FBI agent Steve Moore has shed some light on why it is she may have been taken from her residence by the unidentified suspect.

Steve spoke with true crime reporter Brian Entin on his YouTube channel Brian Entin Investigates, where he suggested there are very few possible motives in this case. He said, “You have to eliminate any other motive very quickly. Does she have money? No, Savannah does. It comes after a mystery man who claimed he “saw Nancy 5 days ago” offered chilling new proof.
“Has she made anybody angry? Not bloody likely. You know it comes all the way down, you step down through all possible motives, and there’s only one or two left. One of them, sexual assault or something you don’t even wanna talk about, and kidnapping would not even come into the equation unless there was somebody in her family, in Nancy’s family, who was well known, and perceived at least as very wealthy.”
The insight comes after Savannah, 54, gave her first interview since Nancy vanished, admitting to her Today co-star Hoda Kotb that she blames herself for whatever has happened to her mom. Speaking in a two-part interview which aired on March 26 and March 27, Savannah was seen sobbing as she she apologized to her mother and other loved ones, admitting she blamed herself for what happened.

“I just didn’t wanna believe it,” she said of the moment her brother said he felt their mother had been kidnapped. “And I said, ‘do you think because of me?’ And he said, ‘yeah, maybe.’ But I knew that.”
“But we still don’t know, we don’t know anything. I don’t know that it’s because she’s my mom. That would make sense, but we don’t know.”
“Which is too much to bear,” she added. “To think that I brought this to her, that it’s because of me. I just say, ‘I’m so sorry, Mommy.’ I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry to my mom and my sister. If it is me, I’m so sorry.”
At one point during their emotional chat, Hoda, 61, asked her about the numerous ransom notes that had materialized at the beginning of the investigation, leaving Savannah to open up and share her feelings about them.
“There were a lot of different notes that came, and I think most of them, it’s my understanding, were not real,” she said. “And I didn’t see them, but, um, you know, a person that would fake a ransom note really has to look deeply at themselves. But, I believe the two notes that we received, that we responded to, I tend to believe that those were real.”
