Stefon Diggs made his long-awaited Commanders debut against a familiar division rival on Sunday. Washington signed the four-time Pro Bowl receiver to a one-year deal back in August, hoping he’d give Jayden Daniels another reliable target.
Diggs stayed quiet through the first three quarters against Philadelphia, managing just a couple of catches before halftime. Everything changed in the fourth quarter, when he finally broke through in a big way.
What happened right after that moment ended up mattering just as much as the catch itself.
A Goalpost Hug Wiped Out A Golden Opportunity

Daniels found Diggs for a 10-yard touchdown, cutting Washington’s deficit to 17-15 with under ten minutes remaining. Given the score, the Commanders were lined up for an automatic two-point conversion attempt to tie the game outright.
Diggs never gave them the chance. He sprinted through the end zone, leaped onto the base of the goalpost, and fell backward onto the turf in celebration. Officials immediately flagged him for unsportsmanlike conduct, a penalty the NFL has enforced strictly ever since goalpost contact became grounds for stadium delays.

The 15-yard penalty pushed Washington’s extra point attempt back to 48 yards, forcing them to kick instead of going for two.
Philadelphia held on for a 24-22 win despite a late Commanders touchdown, with the missed two-point conversion attempt on that final score ultimately proving decisive.
Daniels Didn’t Hide His Frustration Afterward

Daniels addressed the moment directly in his postgame comments, making clear the penalty changed Washington’s approach down the stretch. “We just got to be smart,” the quarterback said. “We probably would have gone for two there.”
This wasn’t Diggs’ first run-in with goalpost celebrations either. He drew an identical penalty and a $12,154 fine back in 2017, well before his stops in Buffalo and New England. Per the league’s fine schedule, Sunday’s celebration will likely cost him close to $15,000 for a first offense this season.
Diggs will look to make his next touchdown count in full going forward. Given how Sunday’s moment played out, both on the field and in how the league chose to present it afterward, he may want to keep his celebrations a little more grounded next time.
