Bill Belichick is being criticized for allegedly displaying poor sportsmanship. In his first season as North Carolina head coach, Belichick isn’t having the success anyone predicted.

His 2025 season has been filled with more headlines about his relationship than his coaching on the field. Last week, his team came out victorious, but the game generated more headlines over Belichick’s daughter-in-law not interacting with Jordon Hudson.

Things appeared tense in Chapel Hill when Hudson and Jennifer Schmitt, amid previous public criticism and a viral CBS interview controversy involving Bill Belichick’s girlfriend.

This week, the Tar Heels were back on the field with a chance to get their record to .500. The Wake Forest Demon Decons had other ideas as they blew them out, 28-12.

Bill Belichick’s struggles could be summed up in the postgame handshake as Demon Deacons Jake Dickert ran towards Belichick while removing his hat as the six-time Super Bowl champion coach plodded his way across the field for a blow-by handshake.

Belichick’s actions after the game caught the attention of many.

After the loss, North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick spoke to the media, saying in part, “Small things. Several drives. A lot of plays. But in the end, we didn’t get it done.”

Bill Belichick has had a horrific first season with the North Carolina Tar Heels. It has been a year filled with negative vibes, relationship woes, and rumors about him leaving.

It has led to some speculation that he might be trying to find a way out.

A real chance emerged after the New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll, but Belichick came out and stated that he was staying with the Tar Heels.

In order to have a little bit of success in 2025, Belichick needs his Tar Heels to win both of their remaining games to qualify for a bowl game. The team’s record is 4-6. They must win their final two games against Duke and N.C. State to reach the minimum of six wins needed for a chance to play in a bowl game.

The Tar Heels, fresh off consecutive wins against Syracuse and Stanford, have secured six consecutive bowl appearances, but have not won a bowl game since 2019.
