DeWanna Bonner left the Indiana Fever abruptlyLAPRESSE
The Indiana Fever are dealing with internal frustration following the sudden departure of veteran forward DeWanna Bonner.
Several players have expressed that the move-coming without a clear explanation-has left the young roster unsettled as they try to regain focus midseason.
Rookie guard Lexie Hull admitted that she and her teammates were blindsided by the development.
“I was super, super, super excited because finally there’s a [player in my position] that I can look up to… I can learn something from her,” Hull says.
“And then she randomly leaves, and we’re all just kind of like, ‘What happened?’ We were never given an explanation. To have no explanation was really challenging.”
A breakdown in chemistry and communication
When Bonner joined the Fever in February, she was expected to bring stability and veteran leadership to a lineup built around rising stars like Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston.
But only nine games into the season, Bonner requested to step away, citing “personal reasons.” The team later waived her, ending a partnership that had barely begun.
Players inside the locker room said the exit felt abrupt and left a noticeable void. Hull revealed that no one received a clear reason for the decision, noting that the lack of transparency disrupted the team’s early rhythm.
Despite the frustration, the players have tried to turn the situation into motivation. Hull added that the adversity has forced everyone to step up calling it a wake-up call for a team still trying to find its identity in the WNBA.
“But I think that helped us grow closer together,” she added. “Because we’re like, ‘All right, this is us. We’re here. We’re going to support each other. We’re loving each other. We’re going to fight for each other. We’re not going to leave. We’re in this together.’”
The Fever front office now faces questions about whether communication could have been handled better.
Signing a seasoned veteran like Bonner was meant to accelerate the team’s growth, but the sudden split instead highlighted the delicate balance between mentorship and chemistry.
Bonner’s reputation remains intact
Meanwhile, Bonner-a five-time WNBA All-Star-remains a respected figure across the league.
Her departure, however, underscores how quickly things can shift for a rebuilding team. For the Fever, the challenge now is not just replacing her production, but re-establishing cohesion in a young locker room that’s learning the realities of professional basketball.
As Clark, Boston, and Hull continue to shoulder greater responsibility, the focus will be on turning disruption into progress.
But for many in the Fever organization, Bonner‘s exit will linger as a lesson in communication-and a reminder that leadership off the court can matter just as much as talent on it.
