Cunningham previously discussed the subject during an interview with ESPN. She said her main concern was protecting young girls and female athletes, arguing that they should not be required to compete against people she described as biological men.
The Fever player also insisted that her position did not come from hatred towards transgender people. She described her view as common sense and later stood by it when reporters asked her to explain further.
Nolan, however, was not persuaded by that defence.
Rather than focusing only on whether Cunningham’s conclusion was right or wrong, the commentator questioned the way the argument itself had been presented. She suggested that complex questions about eligibility and fairness were being reduced to a statement designed to sound impossible to challenge.

During the podcast, Nolan pointed out that almost nobody is calling for the NBA and WNBA to be combined into one competition where every athlete plays together.
In her view, framing the debate in those terms creates a misleading choice. It allows people to ask how anyone could disagree, without first examining whether the statement accurately represents the issue being discussed.
Nolan argued that this kind of messaging is often deliberate. She said listeners should question why a complicated subject is being packaged in such a simple way rather than immediately accepting the conclusion.
Her criticism went beyond Cunningham’s original remarks.
Nolan noted that Cunningham plays in a league with many LGBTQ athletes and suggested that she could speak directly with people around her before taking such a firm public position. She accused the Fever guard of repeating a simplified message without giving enough attention to the wider context.
Cunningham’s comments have already followed her beyond interviews and press conferences.
At games in Seattle and Portland, some spectators reportedly booed her. At the same time, supporters have also gathered outside arenas to back her position.
The conflicting reactions have turned Cunningham into one of the most discussed figures in the league, with conversations about her remarks continuing alongside the Fever’s basketball season.
Indiana coach Stephanie White has previously described the surrounding drama as tiresome. However, the attention has continued, with fans, commentators and other figures around the sport repeatedly weighing in.
Nolan also questioned what she saw as an inconsistency in Cunningham’s public concerns.
She referred to Cunningham’s appearance as a ring girl at a recent UFC event. The card included Conor McGregor, whom Nolan mentioned while discussing serious legal issues connected to him.
The podcast host questioned why Cunningham was placing so much emphasis on what Nolan described as a theoretical form of harm while appearing less concerned about other issues linked to an event in which she had participated.
Nolan’s point was not simply that Cunningham should change her opinion. She argued that the Fever guard should apply the same level of scrutiny across different situations rather than accepting one argument without examining its assumptions.

Cunningham has continued to say that her position is motivated by protection rather than hostility.
She has stressed that she cares about all people while maintaining that women’s sports and young female athletes need to be protected. Despite criticism, she has given no indication that she plans to withdraw or soften those comments.
That has left both women firmly on opposite sides of the discussion.
