Football fans are destroying ESPN’s Adam Schefter for a “clickbait” X/Twitter post that went viral yesterday.
On Monday afternoon, Adam Schefter announced on “X” that former NFL quarterback Tom Brady will compete at a competitive flag football event called the Fanatics Flag Football Classic, along with Rob Gronkowski, CeeDee Lamb, Maxx Crosby, Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey, Myles Garrett and Sauce Gardner.
But fans were upset with how Schefter worded the post at the beginning, starting with the words, “Tom Brady is coming out of retirement, sort of.”
The 48-year-old Tom Brady confirmed the news in a video shared on social media.
There’s no telling how many fans immediately jumped out of their seats, thinking that Adam Schefter’s Brady news would be bigger than a competitive football game. And folks let Schefter hear it.
“Why would you start the tweet like that,” one fan said.
“Do you think you’re funny Adam? DO YOU?” asked another.
“It should be frowned upon to start tweets this way,” a user said.
“Bro what is this click bait,” asked a fan.
“I thought he was joining the Cincinnati Bengals,” wrote another.
“Starting the tweet like that should be illegal,” a user said.
Of course, now’s a good time for football fans to stop holding out any hope of Brady ending retirement. He’s 48, hasn’t played in almost three full years and has two booming careers, as a Fox Sports NFL analyst and a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Not Adam Schefter’s First X/Twitter Controversy

As a prominent NFL insider with millions of followers, Schefter will never perfectly please every football fan whenever he posts an “X”. That said, he’s no stranger to ruffling feathers on social media.
In April 2022, Schefter faced significant backlash for how he worded the news of former NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins’ tragic death. Schefter later took the post down and apologized.
Back in January, plenty of football fans were furious with how Adam Schefter worded a post about Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs and the replay review on the QB slide:
Again, Schefter is never going to be perfect on every single social media post. But one can understand why so many fans were unhappy with how he started the message about Brady, who’s only the most accomplished and decorated player in NFL history.
