Sophie Cunningham says Indiana Fever’s finals dream slipped away because one brutal injury and constant health setbacks shattered momentum, despite Boston and Mitchell powering a resilient run.
The Indiana Fever had one of the best seasons this year. What was thought to be a nightmarish, injury-plagued season turned out into a semi-final run for the team. As the likes of Caitlin Clark, Aari McDonald, and more sat out with injuries, the likes of Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell took charge.
Both Boston and Mitchell made franchise history with Fever’s dual All-WNBA selections. Unfortunately, despite making it to the semi-finals, Stephanie White’s girls had a heartbreak. Playing against the Las Vegas Aces, the Fever missed the finals by a whisker.
Now, as the season ended, looking back at their campaign, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham revealed what exactly cost Fever’s finals dream.
Sophie Cunningham Details Exact Cause Of Indiana Fever’s Downfall
The Indiana Fever not only made it to the semifinals, but it also pushed the Aces to the brink. Unfortunately, in Game 5, Mitchell suffered a brutal leg injury that might have caused the Fever’s momentum to get derailed.

However, according to Cunningham, one particular injury did not have a lasting impact. It was the team’s overall health that caused so much damage.
Speaking with Front Office Sports’ Annie Costabile, Cunningham stated, “Honestly, I think the missing piece is just being healthy. I think that’s the name of the game. And even when we weren’t healthy, we were a couple calls away from making it to the Finals. And so, for us, I think just the amount of adversity that we had through that we went through this past year, I think it’s setting us up.”
Well, Cunningham does have a point here. It is quite problematic for a team to perform well on a consistent basis with so many of its primary stars injured. Meanwhile, looking forward to the next season, Cunningham has teased a full recovery.
Sophie Cunningham Drops A Massive Update On Her Injury
Cunningham had been one of the key players on White’s side. But with her injured MCL, the ‘enforcer’ had to retire to the bench. However, as the next season comes up, the 29-year-old has been looking to attain her peak fitness. In fact, Fever is also helping with her rehab at the moment.

And thankfully for all the fans looking to re-sign Cunningham, the Fever star had good news. In a recent video posted to Instagram earlier this month, Cunningham shared her treadmill workout. Such a sight strongly hints at the Fever star approaching a full recovery.
Thus, with things looking a bit rosy, fans cannot wait to see what happens next.
