Ex-ESPN Host David Pollack’s WNBA Comments Spark Backlash
Fans just can’t accept it.
Former ESPN and College GameDay analyst David Pollack found himself in hot water on social media this weekend after weighing in on a heated WNBA discussion.
The drama kicked off when former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom announced he plans to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft. Kanter said he checked the league’s rulebook and made the move to make a broader point about transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.
“After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I’m officially declaring myself a WNBA prospect,” Kanter wrote on X. He added that he and his team examined the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and believed he met the requirements under the current framework.
Pollack soon reacted to Kanter’s post. The former ESPN analyst appeared to support the announcement and joked about Kanter’s chances in the league.
“Enes Kanter is now the WNBA’s top prospect,” Pollack wrote on X.

Pollack’s post was not accepted by anyone. Some users accused him of encouraging a debate that does not reflect the reality of the WNBA today.
One fan wrote, “The fact you idiots think this is cool or has people laughing with you is exactly why people hate you and make fun of you.”
Another user challenged the premise behind the discussion. “This is stupid David. There has never even been one single trans woman in the history of the WNBA..Why do people keep making an issue out of something that has never ever happened before?” the fan wrote.
Others expressed disappointment with Pollack’s reaction. One fan replied, “Don’t stoop down to this dumb s*** pollack.”
The conversation expanded when ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith addressed Kanter’s announcement. Smith defended the former NBA player and argued that the issue centers on competitive fairness.
“What Enes Kanter is pointing to is about competition,” Smith said. “For someone to transition from male to female, and for folks to act like it would be okay for them to participate in the WNBA is ridiculous.”
The Women’s National Basketball Players Association also entered the discussion on Friday. The union reaffirmed its support for diversity and inclusion while criticizing rhetoric that targets transgender people.
“We embrace justice equity, diversity, and inclusion,” the statement said. “Those are the values that unite this Union and allow it to protect women’s sports while creating transformational change. Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm.”
The debate is still going strong, with reactions to both Pollack’s comment and Kanter’s announcement continue.
