Morgan Freeman’s College GameDay Appearance Has Fans Heartbroken
Fans had a lot to say.
Morgan Freeman finally sat on the College GameDay desk Saturday in The Grove. ESPN brought the 89-year-old Mississippi native in as a guest picker for Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford. He wore the hat and picked the Rebels. Many people still walked away sad.
This was supposed to be a victory lap. Freeman grew up in Charleston, lives in the state, and has been courtside for Rebel basketball for years. Ole Miss even threw him a night in 2020. On paper, he was the perfect voice for a top-10 grudge game.
The set did not match the myth. Viewers came in expecting the movie-trailer voice and got an 89-year-old man working through a long segment under a hot Oxford sun.

The pick itself was clean. Desmond Howard took the Rebels, Pat McAfee took the Rebels and Nick Saban took LSU. Freeman looked at Saban and refused to follow him home.
“Let me just say this out loud: If I go for what’s his name, I will not be able to go home tonight, that’s a fact,” he said. “So, in spite of my belief in your every thought, Ole Miss!”
Morgan Freeman couldn’t believe Coach Saban wasn’t rocking with his Rebels 😂

The Grove exploded. He also told the crowd to knock off the Mississippi State boos earlier in the show, which some fans never forgave.
The kinder version was just age.
“I love Morgan Freeman but man he was very underwhelming on GameDay,” one viewer wrote. “I also didn’t realize how old he is now so that’s probably why.”
“Morgan Freeman was the cringiest gameday picker i can remember. The guy is clearly just too old and doesnt know football. Brutal segment for everyone involved,” one wrote.
“It’s like they rolled Corso back up there… Morgan was bland and a little lost,” another said.

People did not show up to fact-check his appearance. They showed up because that voice has narrated half their lives. Seeing him in an Ole Miss cap at 89, left glove on, moving slower than the highlight packages, knocked some of the fun out of the bit.
Oxford already had enough noise. The same broadcast drowned out Kiffin’s remote hit with Attitude Era boos. Freeman was supposed to be the calm.
He is an honorary alumnus. He is a Chiefs guy on Sundays and is still the guy who can quiet a Grove by asking it to behave. That is why the comments split between Hotty Toddy and a lump in the throat.
No. 7 LSU and No. 8 Ole Miss kicked later on ABC. Freeman had already done his job. He picked the house. The internet just was not ready to see him look 89 while doing it.
