Savannah Guthrie is reportedly “livid” over inaccurate reports suggesting her brother-in-law might be a suspect in the investigation surrounding her missing mother, according to a former NBC colleague.

Podcaster Ashleigh Banfield incorrectly identified Tommaso Cioni, who is married to Annie Guthrie and is Savannah’s brother-in-law, as a potential suspect in the kidnapping. Banfield made these allegations during a February 3 episode of her program, Drop Dead Serious With Ashleigh Banfield.

These claims contradict statements from Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, who has emphasized that Nancy’s family members have been eliminated as possible suspects. The speculation follows the emergence of a disturbing new theory about how Nancy was abducted from her residence.

Megyn Kelly, a former NBC personality where Savannah’s Today show is broadcast, indicated that Nancy’s daughter is enraged by the allegations against her brother-in-law. “I have not been able to confirm that the Guthrie family wants to sue Ashleigh Banfield, but I have confirmed that Savannah is livid about that report and definitely does not suspect her sister or her brother-in-law,” Kelly stated on an episode of SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Show.

During the March 12 broadcast, Kelly added, “Can you blame her? I mean, of course, she loves her sister, I’m sure she loves her brother-in-law, and I’m sure she genuinely doesn’t believe they had anything to do with it.”, reports the Mirror US.

“All of us are in a different boat – you know, we have to be more objective in assessing the possible suspects, the possible people connected with it, and law enforcement certainly does.”

The Pima County Sheriff appeared to address Banfield’s assertions regarding Cioni when he released a statement shortly thereafter: “Nobody’s eliminated, but we just really don’t have enough to say, ‘This is our suspect, this is our guy, we know – or our gal.’”

He continued, “We don’t know that. And it’s really kind of reckless to report that someone is a suspect when they could very well be a victim. … To the media, I plead with you to be careful of what it is we put out there, because we don’t have anybody here listed as a suspect, and you could actually be doing some damage to the case – but you can do some damage to that individual, too. Social media is kind of an ugly world sometimes.”

Subsequently, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department released an additional statement declaring, “The family has been nothing but co-operative and gracious and are victims in this case. To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel.”

Speaking with NBC News, Nanos explained his office issued the statement because individuals had been “attacking the innocent.” Emphasizing that “kindness matters” he texted in conclusion, “Every cops duty to stand up and be that voice for our victims.”

In a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter, a producer for Drop Dead Serious With Ashleigh Banfield confirmed the journalist “stands by her reporting.”

The producer emphasized she is standing behind her “ironclad source.”
