Spain ultimately had plenty to celebrate beyond the viral moment. La Roja defeated defending champion Argentina 1-0 after extra time, thanks to Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute winner to lift the country’s World Cup trophy.
Spain dominated much of the final, while Emiliano Martínez repeatedly kept Argentina alive with a string of impressive saves.
The champions were outstanding throughout the tournament. Spain topped Group H before defeating Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32, Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16, Belgium 2-1 in the quarterfinals and France 2-0 in the semifinals. They then capped the run by edging Argentina in extra time.
The viral fan moment added another unforgettable scene to a day Spain supporters will remember forever.
