Bueckers has been able to avoid a repeat of the stalking incident which plagued Clark’s rookie WNBA season

The rise of social media has brought with it a darker side for athletes, particularly in women’s sports. Stalking and harassment have become all too common, with stars like Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark, and Paige Bueckers facing unsettling incidents.
Angel Reese recently spoke out about AI-generated images being sent to her family, a distressing example of how far some individuals will go to invade players’ privacy. The increase in such incidents has left many wondering: what is the WNBA doing to protect its players?
The growing problem: Stalking and harassment in women’s sports
As women’s basketball gains unprecedented popularity, with WNBA viewership soaring to 1.2 million per game in 2024-a 170% increase from previous years-the toxic side of fandom has also intensified.
In December 2024, a 40-year-old man pleaded guilty to stalking Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers. His behavior included posting fake wedding invitations and pictures of himself wearing an engagement ring on social media. He also sent emails to UConn’s communications department stating that he wanted to marry her. Understandably, Paige expressed feeling “concerned” and “worried,” not just for herself, but for her family and teammates as well.
Caitlin Clark also faced stalking earlier this year, leaving her “very fearful,” and other players, including Brittney Griner, Alyssa Thomas, and Breanna Stewart, have experienced racial slurs, online harassment, and homophobic messages. These distressing incidents highlight the urgent need for stronger protection for female athletes.
WNBA steps up: The launch of the player safety task force
In response to the growing concern over harassment, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has announced the formation of a new task force dedicated to combating hate and vitriol directed at players, coaches, and key stakeholders. The Player Safety Task Force, launched in April 2025, aims to provide enhanced security both online and at games, and offer mental health support for players.
The task force employs advanced technology to monitor social media for threats, strengthens fan conduct rules, and ensures increased security measures at games. These steps represent a much-needed effort to keep players like Paige Bueckers safe and secure, addressing both physical and psychological well-being.
The league’s commitment to player protection has been welcomed by fans, with many expressing relief that athletes are finally receiving the security they deserve.
“So glad to see Paige Bueckers (and hopefully the rest of the WNBA) finally get security. This has been a long time coming,” one fan commented.
The launch of the WNBA‘s Player Safety Task Force marks a pivotal moment for the league and its athletes. This initiative is not only about addressing harassment and stalking but also fostering an environment where players can feel safe, valued, and empowered. With these new safety measures, the WNBA is setting an important example for other sports leagues to follow.
