While the two were once one of the most dominant duos in NBA history, their relationship was also marked by tension, public jabs, and a split that shook the Lakers’ dynasty. However, according to Shaq, one small but powerful act changed his perspective on everything. The 53-year-old, who was once in the middle of a bizzare story shared by former Lakers trainer, talked about the situation on the podcast:

“Kobe was just dropping me off and that sh*t just felt like old times, and then they gave it to both of us. And I really, of course, I really have respect for him, but I really knew that the beef had to be over because little Shareef with me and he gave the trophy to Shareef.”

“So I was like f*ck I can’t even do the WWE sh*t no more. It’s been over. But I told you upstairs, I like the motherf*cker pressing buttons, you’re always talking about me. When he gave Shareef the trophy… that’s when I knew I had to get rid of that.”

The two may’ve spent years at odds, be it competing for the limelight or trading shots in the media, but Shaquille O’Neal’s words just show how deep their bond truly was. However, Betts isn’t celebrating just yet. Speaking to SportsNet LA after the game, he dropped a cold reminder straight out of Kobe Bryant’s playbook:

“I have zero emotions. We’re up, but like Kobe said: job’s not done.”
