Former Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball head coach Lisa Bluder offered an in-depth take on the ultimate weakness in Caitlin Clark’s otherwise all-world game.

Bluder coached Clark at Iowa for four seasons (2020-21 to 2023-24), with the pair helping the Hawkeyes to consecutive national championship game appearances in 2023 and 2024. Bluder retired from coaching last year.

Clark has emerged as the face of the WNBA since the Indiana Fever drafted her first overall a year ago. Known as the “Caitlin Clark effect,” the 23-year-old has single-handedly increased the league’s global following.

On Thursday night, Bluder appeared on the broadcast of Indiana’s road game against the Atlanta Dream and offered her analysis of Clark’s game. Bluder explained that she thinks “the backdoor cut” is the main issue in Clark’s game:

“I just would love to see her coming off a few more screens, Caitlin’s never been great at the backdoor cut. I think that’s something she can really improve on in the future is really try and beat people off that backdoor cut. If they’re gonna face guard her, that’s what you got to do.”
