BREAKING: Coach Calls Out Fernando Mendoza — And It’s Brutal

A coach’s take puts Mendoza’s NFL future in question.

Fernando Mendoza entered the NFL with huge expectations. He made his name during the 2025 college football season, leading the Indiana Hoosiers to a national title and winning the Heisman Trophy. And all these made him one of the top prospects in the draft.

The Las Vegas Raiders picked him No. 1 overall and now expect him to help turn the team around. Head coach Klint Kubiak plans to develop him with support from experienced QB Kirk Cousins. The team believes Mendoza can bring stability and success.

But not everyone agrees. An anonymous ACC coach questioned Mendoza’s ability in comments to ESPN. The coach had faced him before, when he played for the California Golden Bears, and shared strong doubts about his game.

Doubts Surface Despite Strong College Resume

The coach questioned Mendoza’s ability to translate his skills to the NFL. “He’s a good decision-maker, but I don’t think he’s got the NFL traits. They’re all back-shoulder [throws],” the coach told ESPN. “That’s not working in the NFL. His receivers made plays to make him look better than he is. In the NFL, those throws are getting picked off.”

Those comments don’t match what Mendoza did in college. He threw for 3,535 yards and 41 touchdowns in his only season with the Indiana Hoosiers. He also stepped up in big moments. In one key game against Penn State Nittany Lions, he threw a late touchdown to Omar Cooper Jr. to keep the team’s perfect season alive.

Raiders general manager John Spytek dismissed any doubts before the draft. He refused to consider trade offers for the top pick. He backed Mendoza’s talent and mindset.

“I think any coach is excited to work with a big, athletic, talented thrower that is extremely smart and a very driven worker,” Spytek said. “That’s been our experience with Fernando.”

Mendoza also stayed calm in the national title game against Miami. He led the offense with confidence, and many coaches and scouts praised his leadership and toughness.

Now, the focus moves to the NFL. Mendoza will face faster defenses and tougher situations. He will need to adjust quickly. The Raiders believe he can do it, but some critics remain unsure.

His rookie season will show who is right.
