Sophie Cunningham’s Indiana Fever return is in doubt as reports suggest the team is focused on re-signing Kelsey Mitchell.

Sophie Cunningham could ask for the world this offseason, but it’s up to the Indiana Fever if they fulfill her wish.

She had a standout 2025 season with the team, where she emerged as Caitlin Clark’s “enforcer,” and has fans clamoring for her return.

But as the WNBA offseason unfolds, her future with the team hangs by a thread. And there are high chances the Fever could prioritize signing Kelsey Mitchell over her.

Sophie Cunningham’s Fever Returns In Jeopardy As Team Target Kelsey Mitchell

According to SB Nation’s Noa Delzell, the Fever are prioritizing a multi-year deal for Mitchell. However, it comes at a time when Cunningham hinted at leaving the team under one condition.

Although there are lower chances of her send-off, the current situation suggests that her exit from Indiana is becoming increasingly likely.

The Fever’s blockbuster February trade with Phoenix brought Cunningham to Indiana, where her 12.2 points per game and 43% three-point shooting made her a perfect fit alongside Clark.

However, an August MCL tear sidelined her, and with Clark also injured, neither player participated in the semifinal run. Now an unrestricted free agent alongside seven other Fever players, her status is shaky.

GM Amber Cox and coach Stephanie White have zeroed in on re-signing three-time All-Star Kelsey Mitchell, who averaged 20.2 points and finished fifth in MVP voting.

Additionally, teams like the Lynx, eyeing her shooting and versatility, could pounce. But Cunningham bashed the Lynx trade rumor.

What Did Sophie Cunningham Say About Leaving Fever?

Cunningham dropped a bombshell on her “Show Me Something” podcast, signaling her openness to leaving. While she laid her plans bare, Sophie hinted at one potential reason for parting ways with the team.

“I think the next team I play for I want a bigger contract, so I can then buy a house and be homey and cozy,” Cunningham said, adding, “It could be anywhere” when co-host West Wilson suggested the Liberty or Lynx.

With free agency delayed, her next move hinges on CBA outcomes and Indiana’s budget. And the wait would be worth every second, given her star stature.
