“I used to be self-conscious about my scars,” Emma shared in a confessional interview.
“On dates, it would just be like, an elephant in the room. People stared a lot and didn’t ask questions and that was really uncomfortable.”
The reality star said that getting to know people while in the show’s signature pods was a major draw of the experience for her.
“When I’m here you completely erase all those physical appearances,” she said.
“My whole life has been thinking about the physical aspect, so this is the first time I get to showcase my personality.”
Emma, 27, revealed that she was born with a birthmark that covered her whole arm.
Because the birthmark had a high chance of developing melanoma, she had ten surgeries before the age of 7 to remove it.
She added that while the biggest birthmark was on her arm, she has many across her body that she has to get checked every year.
She also shared that she was born in China, but adopted by a white family in Ohio.
Emma initially said that she didn’t want to share her past with the other contestants, but later opened up to Steven, 32.
“I think this was something that I struggled with growing up,” she told Steven.
“It’s not hindering my abilities to do anything, but I do think it’s impacted the way people see me on dates, the way I am perceived.”
