Steve Sarkisian delivered tough news on Saturday. The Texas Longhorns football head coach confirmed the dismissal of linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith. The decision came for conduct detrimental to the team.
Smith ranked as one of the top returning defenders. He recorded 60 tackles last season, the second-most among returning players. Those numbers included 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and two forced fumbles.
He appeared in 12 games and earned his first start in the Citrus Bowl against Michigan. In that contest, he posted nine tackles and two interceptions. The Jasper, Texas, product seemed poised for a larger role this fall. However, his actions cost him the chance to leave a mark on one of the most iconic college football programs.

Smith competed with transfers Rasheem Biles and Justin Cryer for a starting spot. Recent departures left the position group thinner. Anthony Hill Jr. and Trey Moore moved on to the NFL. Liona Lefau transferred to Colorado.
Sarkisian addressed the situation directly after a team scrimmage.
“I didn’t like it,” he said, per ESPN. “It’s an unfortunate situation for him individually. For us as a team, I hate that. He’s a quality player, but I have to think about the team first.”
Smith had battled the flu the previous week and missed a scrimmage. The timing leaves the Longhorns adjusting. In just two weeks, they will play the season opener against Texas State.

On the other hand, Sarkisian praised transfer Justin Cryer for his approach.
“[Cryer] is squeezing every ounce of juice that he can out of this opportunity to be at Texas, and it’s greatly appreciated,” Sarkisian said. “I think it serves as a great model for a lot of the other transfers. This guy didn’t wait and feel it out to ‘Where do I fit in?’ He’s gone for it. And I think he’s reaping the benefits of it. He’s playing at a high level for us right now.”
Cryer’s effort sets a strong example for other newcomers.
The defense must grow into new roles under coordinator Will Muschamp. Freshmen and remaining veterans will step up. Depth remains a concern after multiple losses at the position.
The University of Texas moves forward without one of its experienced defenders. Sarkisian prioritizes team standards over individual talent. The Longhorns now turn their focus to final preparations for the season ahead.
