The Atlanta Falcons have signed a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback and highly-touted second-round pick following the latest Michael Penix Jr injury update.
On Monday, it was reported that the Falcons feared a season-ending knee injury for Michael Penix, who left Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Unfortunately, the Falcons received confirmation that Penix will need surgery and is done for the season.
Kirk Cousins wil return to starting quarterback duties, but the Falcons have made another interesting QB move with Penix done for the season.
Per Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the Falcons have signed former Buccaneers signal-caller Kyle Trask to their practice squad. The No. 64 pick of 2021 spent four seasons as a backup in Tampa before he was released in August.
Trask was viewed as a potential succession plan to Tom Brady, but Baker Mayfield went on to revive his career in Tampa after signing there in 2023. Trask has appeared briefly in seven NFL games, completing four of 11 pass attempts.

The Falcons haven’t gotten much of anything going this year, though Penix Jr., Drake London and Bijan Robinson showed plenty of promise on offense together. With Penix out for the season, however, there’s little for Falcons fans to get excited about.
Remember, Atlanta owes its 2026 first-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams after moving up for James Pearce Jr. Now, Atlanta fans can only hope that Cousins will regain his Pro Bowl form and lead them to a strong finish.
Kirk Cousins was the subject of trade rumors leading up to the deadline, but the Falcons kept him on as an insurance policy behind Michael Penix. If Cousins finishes the season on a high note, he’ll only help his chances of earning a starting job elsewhere in 2026.
