Blue Bloods Offshoot Adds Sonequa Martin-Green; Donnie Wahlberg Says Fans Will Be 'Very Happy' With Series

Star Trek Discovery alum Sonequa Martin-Green has copped a new role — on CBS‘ “Blue Bloods Universe expansion” titled Boston Blue.

Debuting this fall (premiere date TBA) and airing Friday at 10/9c, Boston Blue finds franchise vet Donnie Wahlberg’s Detective Danny Reagan leaving New York City and his family to take a position with the Boston Police Department. There, he will be partnered with Detective Lena Silver (played by Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.

The casting news was announced by Martin-Green and Wahlberg, in person, at a Wednesday morning CBS press event that unveiled the network’s full 2025-26 schedule.

“Danny does not like Boston very much, as we’ll discover,” Wahlberg said with a chuckle. “He’s a New Yorker, he’s a Mets fan and a Jets fan….”

“You’re going to have a lot of fun poking fun at me,” Martin-Green said to her new scene partner. “And I’m going to have to get a really good Boston accent just so I can like throw it out at times!”

Wahlberg went on to assure fans of the original Blue Bloods that in this offshoot, “Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family’s. You can’t have Danny without Reagans.

“There’ll be connective tissue to the old family,” he added. “But we’re also going to get to discover a new family” — the Silvers — “and carry on the tradition of telling their stories and still telling the Reagan stories.

“No Blue Bloods fans will be disappointed,” Wahlberg avowed, reiterating later: “We are really working on this universe in a way that I think the Blue Bloods viewers are going to be very happy.”

Boston Blue begins filming late this summer.
