The Late Voice Alum’s Choir Director Broke The News

The Voice franchise originates with The Voice of Holland. Over the years, it has spun off several foreign counterparts, with its American incarnation debuting in 2011.

Since then, the series has introduced viewers to many different contestants from around the world. Recently, news has come out that one contestant from the series has lost their life.

Ifunanya Nwangene was a rising singer who appeared on the third season of The Voice Nigeria. Reportedly, she died after suffering a snake bite. She was 26 at the time of her death.

On Facebook, Music director Sam C. Ezugwu with Amemuso Choir, which Nwangene participated in, released a statement. It read, “Amemuso Choir [regrets] to announce the sudden demise of our beloved soprano. A rising star, Ifunanya was on the cusp of sharing her incredible talent with the world. Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed.”

Another Nigerian Musician Recently Shared A Tribute To Ifunanya Nwangene

Speaking with BBC Africa, fellow choir member Hillary Obinna shared more details about the tragedy. Reportedly, Nwangene was asleep at the time of the snake attack, with its bite waking her up. It was also claimed that two snakes were later found at her home.

The singer had attempted to get treatment for the bite at a local clinic. However, no antivenom was available. She later sought help from a hospital.

 

Since her time on the show, Nwangene shared her music on social media, including Instagram and YouTube. This included covers and original songs.

On Instagram, another Nigerian musician, Tbrass, shared that Nwangene had recently been at his studio to record a feature for his next album. He wrote a tribute to the singer, saying, “An irreplaceable loss to the Abuja music society and Nigeria at large… It is very heartbreaking — especially in Nigeria where music runs deep in our souls and connects us all.”

According to BBC Africa, Ezugwu shared that Nwangene had also been planning her first solo concert for 2026 at the time of her death. The outlet also noted, “There has been an outpouring of grief in Nigeria following the death of an aspiring singer,” in tribute to Nwangene.
