Veteran quarterback Bailey Zappe had three disappointing preseason outings with the Kansas City Chiefs, and the coaching staff has decided that they saw more than enough.

Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs have waived Bailey Zappe ahead of tomorrow’s 53-man roster deadline. The 26-year-old signed with Kansas City in March after a short stint with the Cleveland Browns.

With Zappe waived, Patrick Mahomes, Gardner Minshew II and Chris Oladokun are the three remaining quarterbacks on Kansas City’s depth chart. Unless KC were to replace Minshew or Oladokun with another signal-caller, it appears that head coach Andy Reid has settled on his quarterback room for 2025.

Per NFL.com, Bailey Zappe had 104 passing yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Kansas City’s three preseason games. The Chiefs open their 2025 season against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 5.

Zappe wasn’t the only notable quarterback cut on Monday, as the Philadelphia Eagles surprisingly cut rookie and former Ohio State standout Kyle McCord.

But Zappe was unable to continue the magic in a miserable 2023 season that saw him and Jones play musical chairs at quarterback. Zappe went 2-4 as a starter with only 1,272 yards, six touchdowns and nine interceptions for a passer rating of 68.7, a steep decline from the 100.9 rating he posted a year earlier.

Zappe’s release is one of two notable roster moves made by GM Brett Veach over the past 24 hours. On Sunday, he traded for old friend and defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi in a deal with the New York Jets.
