The sun appears to be setting on Miami‘s Tua Tagovailoa era.

As the Dolphins look to rebuild under new head coach Jeff Hafley, the team has made it clear that it’s willing to moving off of its former No. 5 pick at quarterback. But while a trade would be most ideal, the organization is reportedly running into a $214 million problem.

Miami signed Tua to a massive four-year extension back in 2024 that has made his trade value essentially zero given his recent play — forcing the the Phins to likely have to go another route to save whatever money they can.

Dolphins expected to release Tua Tagovailoa after June 1

Per ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano, the silence on the Tua trade front means that Miami will probably have to do what it was trying to avoid — and that would be designating the QB as a post-June 1 release and eating the majority of his historic $99.2 million cap hit.

“The Dolphins continue to tell people that they’ve had trade talks with teams and haven’t given up on trying to trade Tagovailoa, even though that would mean picking up a significant portion of his $54 million in fully guaranteed 2026 salary,” Graziano wrote.

“But based on my conversations with other teams, I’m skeptical, and I expect Miami to release Tagovailoa by the third day of the league year (when $3 million of his 2027 salary would become fully guaranteed).”

Dolphins GM on Tua: ‘Everything’s on the table’

Speaking to reporters at the NFL Combine earlier this week, Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan admitted that “everything’s on the table” regarding the Tua situation.

“Everything’s on the table right now. It could go in a lot of different ways,” Sullivan said. “A trade is a possibility, but Tua is aware, his representation is aware. We’ve had really positive conversations, and, like I said, it’s kind of all on the table when it comes to Tua at this moment.”

“[Tua’s reps] have expressed that he wants to play and that they still think he can play at a high level,” the GM continued. “The conversations have been productive, but they have not in particular said that they want to be traded.”

Releasing Tua after June 1 would allow Miami to split the QB’s dead cap penalty over the next two seasons starting with a $67.4 million hit in 2026. Which is still more than it would like to pay, but is something the team knew could be on the board when it signed him to his big money deal.
