The Phoenix Suns are reportedly preparing to part ways with Kevin Durant this summer. According to sources, the organization is looking for a trade deal that mirrors the significant package they gave up to acquire Durant from the Brooklyn Nets. This suggests the Suns want a considerable return, likely involving young talent and multiple draft picks.

Several teams have been floated as potential destinations for Durant. One team that has surfaced recently is the New York Knicks. However, any hope of a reunion between Durant and his hometown team may have been short-lived.

According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, the Knicks are not currently pursuing a trade for Durant. Bondy specifically noted that New York is “not in the mix” for the former MVP.

The Knicks recently parted ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau following their loss in the conference finals. As a result, their main focus now appears to be finding the right coaching replacement to lead the team rather than immediately concentrating on reshaping the roster.

Durant is expected to make one of the biggest moves of the offseason, and no matter which team lands him, there is already a strong expectation surrounding his contract plans. According to Ivan Sidery, wherever Durant ends up being traded, he is likely to sign a two-year extension worth $120 million.

This new deal would significantly extend Durant’s commitment to his next team. By signing the extension, Durant’s new team would secure him on the books for a total of $174.7 million over the next three seasons.

The financial breakdown of the contract is substantial. For the 2025 to 2026 season, Durant would earn $54.7 million. The following year, his salary would rise to $57.3 million. By the 2027 to 2028 campaign, he would make $62.7 million.

For teams interested in acquiring Durant, the potential to lock him in through 2028 makes the trade even more appealing. It gives a future contender one of the league’s most skilled scorers and a multi-year window to build around him.
