NEWS: Netflix Releases “The Underdog,” a Highly Anticipated Documentary About Super Bowl LIII MVP Julian Edelman, Slated for Release on May 10, 2025
Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of “The Underdog,” a new documentary chronicling the inspiring journey of Julian Edelman — Super Bowl LIII MVP and one of the most unlikely stars in NFL history. The film is set to premiere globally on May 10, 2025, exclusively on the streaming platform.
“The Underdog” delves deep into Edelman’s rise from a small-town quarterback at Kent State University to becoming one of the most iconic wide receivers for the New England Patriots. Selected in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft, Edelman defied all odds and carved out a remarkable 12-year NFL career, capturing three Super Bowl titles and earning MVP honors in Super Bowl LIII. Despite lacking the traditional size and pedigree of most NFL stars, Edelman built his legacy through grit, hustle, and an unmatched work ethic.
Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Matthew Hamachek (Tiger), the documentary blends never-before-seen archival footage, behind-the-scenes moments, and candid interviews with Edelman, his teammates, coaches, and family members. Viewers will get an intimate look into the highs and lows of his career, from career-threatening injuries to his legendary playoff performances and clutch catches that defined a dynasty.
“This film is about more than football,” Edelman said in a recent interview. “It’s about believing in yourself when no one else does — and never backing down, no matter the challenge.”
The release comes at a time when sports documentaries are surging in popularity, with Netflix previously delivering hits like “Quarterback,” “The Last Dance,” and “Untold.” “The Underdog” aims to capture the spirit of perseverance and the mindset that turned Edelman into a fan favorite and a key figure in one of the NFL’s greatest dynasties.
Fans of the Patriots, football, and comeback stories alike are expected to tune in when the documentary premieres. With its raw storytelling and motivational themes, “The Underdog” is poised to be a powerful addition to Netflix’s growing lineup of sports content.
“The Underdog” will be available for streaming on Netflix starting May 10, 2025.
