Recently, Colbert has come under fire for comments made concerning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. At the time, he compared them to Nazis.
Colbert made these comments on his Monday, January 26th, 2026, show. At the time, he played a clip of Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino during a CNN interview. As seen in the clip, Bovino claimed that “trying to portray Border Patrol agents and ICE agents as Gestapo, Nazi, and many other words.”
Bovino spoke after the recent shooting of nurse Alex Pretti in Minnesota on January 24, 2026. This took place following the shooting of Renée Good earlier in the month.
Cutting back to Colbert, he ultimately compared the ICE agents unfavorably to the Nazis. He shared, “Yes, do not compare ICE or Border Patrol agents to the Nazis. That’s an unfair comparison. The Nazis were willing to show their faces.”
During the show, Colbert’s comments received applause on social media. However, others were more critical of the comments on social media.
Many Criticized The Comparison, But Others Defended Colbert
Taking to X, actor Michael Rapaport wrote that the current events in Minnesota were “horrible.” However, he felt Colbert’s recent comparison was a “vile, ridiculous cheap joke.” Rapaport added, “What’s more offensive, Colbert? Or the crowd laughing?”
Iranian-born American columnist and editor Sohrab Ahmari also dubbed Colbert’s comments as “obscene,” “ahistorical,” and “illiterate.” Singer John Ondrasik also dubbed the oke an “evil act” that could risk getting “protestors and law enforcement killed.”
With the segment released on the show’s YouTube page, many have also shared their reactions under the video. Meanwhile, others continued to discuss the comments on X. While some disagreed with the joke, others came to Colbert’s defense. Some comments included:
“’The Nazi’s were willing to show their faces’ was a chilling sentence to hear.”
“@StephenAtHome’s last show is Thursday, May 21, 2026. Good riddance.”
“Thank you Stephen and your writing team.”
“This might be one of the worst things anyone has ever said on TV.”
