Wake Forest legend and former NBA star Rodney Rogers has tragically passed away, per an announcement from the university.
Rogers, who represented the Demon Deacons from 1990-1993 and had his No. 54 jersey retired just three years after leaving, di3d on Friday at the age of 54.
He is survived by his wife, Faye, and three children, two of whom have also played college basketball.
“Rodney is truly one of the greatest athletes to ever play in the Atlantic Coast Conference — without reservation. You can place him alongside the very best our league has ever seen,” former Wake Forest coach Dave Odom, who worked with Rogers, said in a statement.
Rogers was the ninth overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft, the highest-drafted player from Wake Forest in 30 years. He played for seven franchises over the course of a 12-year professional career and was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2000, while with the Phoenix Suns.
“He will be remembered not only for his achievements on the court but also for the extraordinary resilience, courage and generosity that he demonstrated throughout his life — qualities that inspired so many. We send our heartfelt condolences to Rodney’s wife, Faye, and their family,” the league said.

Called the “Durham Bull,” having been born in Durham, North Carolina, Rodney Rogers led the Demon Deacons to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 outing in his final year.
He remains the school’s only player to win both ACC Freshman of the Year and ACC Player of the Year, and one of just seven ACC players to claim the honor.
Rogers was involved in an ATV accident back in 2008 that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. He would go on to found the Rodney Rogers Foundation to assist people with spinal cord injuries.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
May he rest in peace.
