Caitlin Clark speaking to Diana Taurasi

She was always going to have something to say about it.

We can’t be sure what things are like between Diana Taurasi and Caitlin Clark.

Taurasi wasn’t exactly welcoming when Clark entered the WNBA as the No. 1 overall pick in 2024.

And now, the Indiana Fever star is wearing her No. 12 for Team USA, going viral for certain antics while doing so.

Taurasi is, of course, one of the most accomplished players on the international stage. She won six Olympic gold medals and three FIBA world championships with her country while wearing the number.

With Clark wearing it now, Sports Illustrated wanted to know how she felt about the sharpshooting guard suiting up in the iconic numerals. She seemed proud to have Caitlin take it over.

“It’s so cool. You know, to see Caitlin not only wear the USA jersey, but number 12,” she said. “I mean, I spent two decades wearing that jersey and that number. And I couldn’t think of anyone better to take it and put it on and just have an amazing career. And Caitlin will do that.”

Clark wore No. 22 in college and wears it for the Fever. However, players typically take up different numbers for international games, so she’s got Taurasi’s old number.

“It’s just going to be fun to watch her play this summer in Germany and then the Olympics,” the three-time WNBA champion said. “No one better to wear the 12, and Caitlin’s going to put some gold medals on that jersey. I know it.”

Taurasi had no control over what happened to the number, and it doesn’t appear that she wanted anyway. But she reckons Sue Bird may have played a role in Clark landing No. 12.

“You know, once I’m out of things, I’m out,” she said. “Sue, you know, she’s a little bit more calculated than people think. So maybe that was a Sue job.”
