MTV is permanently shutting down its iconic music channels worldwide after 44 years.

Music lovers only have a few more hours to enjoy MTV‘s remaining music channels before they’re removed for good.

Paramount Global revealed on Tuesday that it’s stripping MTV’s 24-hour music-only channels from its lineup for U.K./Europe distributors Sky and Virgin Media by the year’s end.

While this has been the case in some areas of the U.S., others outside the country still had access to dedicated music channels such as MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live.

Even the regional channel feeds in the States that still carried music-centered MTV channels will no longer be available after the New Year, as distribution contracts are set to expire.

Fans expressed their disappointment about the news on social media, reminiscing about the days when MTV only played music videos, not reality TV shows or pop culture programs.

“Yes, it’s sad, I will miss them music channels,” one X user wrote.

“#MTV’s last music channels go dark tonight and I’m suddenly 14 again watching TRL after school,” someone else said, referencing MTV’s Total Request Live, which aired in the late 1990s and early 2000s, featuring a roundup of the top music videos and celebrity appearances.

“The era of MTV as a music video destination that defined generations has ended,” a third remarked, with a broken-heart emoji.

Others clarified that while MTV’s music-only channels are going dark, the main MTV channel’s programming will continue as usual.

MTV currently features a range of reality shows, including Jersey Shore, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Catfish: The TV Show, and reruns of older programs.

In October, it was revealed that MTV had cancelled its long-running series, Ridiculousness, which had been a staple on the network since 2011

The comedy series, which showed TV personality Rob Dyrdek critiquing viral videos, ran for 46 seasons.

No more original episodes of the show will be produced; however, episodes that were previously produced and had not yet aired will run through 2026.

Previous seasons will also still be available on MTV and Paramount+.
