Caitlin Clark’s rookie WNBA season has been anything but smooth sailing, and the latest setback has Indiana Fever fans holding their breath once again. As the Fever gear up for a Sunday afternoon showdown with Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky, all eyes are on the sidelines—because that’s where Clark will be, forced to sit out yet another game as she continues to rehab a nagging groin injury.
It’s been a frustrating stretch for both Clark and the Fever faithful. After missing time earlier this season with a quad injury, the No. 1 overall pick was just starting to find her rhythm when a groin strain knocked her out of action earlier this month. Since then, she’s been limited to just 13 games—a far cry from the electrifying debut campaign fans were hoping for.
The Fever released an update last Thursday, offering a mix of relief and uncertainty. “Caitlin Clark underwent further medical evaluations earlier this week, which confirmed that no additional injuries or damage were discovered,” the team said in a statement. “Clark will continue working with the medical team on her recovery and rehabilitation, with the priority on her long-term health and well-being. There is no timetable available for her return.”
While the news that there’s no further damage is reassuring, the lack of a clear return date leaves Indiana in limbo. ESPN has floated August 12th as a possible target for Clark’s return, but that would mean she misses at least seven more games—a critical stretch as the Fever fight tooth and nail for a playoff spot.
The Fever’s cautious approach is understandable, especially after Clark appeared to re-aggravate her injury by returning to action a bit too soon last time. No one wants to risk her long-term health for a handful of regular season games, no matter how important the playoff push might be. But it does mean the pressure is squarely on Clark’s teammates to step up and deliver in her absence.
For now, fans will have to settle for glimpses of Clark on the bench, cheering her team on and itching to get back out there. The hope is that when she finally returns, she’ll be fully healthy—and ready to remind everyone why she was the most anticipated rookie in recent WNBA history. Until then, the Fever will have to dig deep and find a way to keep their playoff hopes alive without their superstar.
