Michael Jordan was recently called out, not by a rival or analyst, but by former UNC star Rashad McCants. He wants Jordan to support the program that made him a legend and he is pretty serious about his take.
McCants, who helped lead UNC to the 2005 national title, says it’s time for Jordan and other alumni to throw their financial weight behind the school’s NIL efforts. “It’s a whole revamp, a whole rebuilding situation down in Carolina,” McCants told Kyle Odegard.
“The culture of college basketball has changed with the NIL. Michael Jordan needs to throw some money in there. Stackhouse, Vince Carter, all these guys that are alumni. They say it’s a brotherhood. You’ve got to offer the bread.”
That’s quite the challenge for the greatest basketball player ever. Jordan’s loyalty to UNC has never been in doubt, but McCants’ message cuts deeper, it’s about adapting to a new era of college hoops. The NIL world is changing the game fast, and McCants believes UNC’s biggest icons should be leading the charge.
Jordan hasn’t responded yet, but McCants’ comments are causing a stir online. Fans are debating whether Jordan should get involved financially, especially since UNC’s basketball program remains one of the top in the country.

North Carolina enters the 2025-26 season ranked No. 25, and pressure is mounting on head coach Hubert Davis to deliver another deep March run. The Tar Heels’ last trip to the title game came in 2022, but they haven’t been able to recapture that spark since.
McCants’ comments lit a fire under Tar Heel fans. Some say Jordan has already given enough to the program. Others agree with McCants, insisting that NIL money from alumni could keep UNC competitive with powerhouses like Duke and Kentucky.
North Carolina isn’t struggling, but McCants’ words highlight how much expectations still weigh on the blue blood. Three national titles since Jordan’s time prove the tradition is alive, but the modern college landscape demands new kinds of commitment
It’s unclear if Jordan will respond. But as Anthony Edwards shared about advice from Michael Jordan, it’s clear MJ’s influence still shapes basketball, and Tar Heel fans hope it will impact the NIL era too.
