Yesterday, it was announced that Academy Award-winning actor Robert Duvall had passed away at the age of 95 over the weekend. Duvall, who won an Oscar for his leading role in Tender Mercies and two Primetime Emmy Awards, was best known for the countless films and television shows he starred in during his career that got started in 1960. Some might know him from classic movies like The Godfather, Days of Thunder and Apocalypse Now. Others might remember him for his more comedic roles in Kicking and Screaming and Four Christmases. Simply put, he’s a name that will go down in the history books as one of the best actors of all time, up there with the likes of Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and more.
His wife, Luciana, shared this message yesterday letting the world know that Robert Duvall had passed on:
“Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort. To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court.
For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.”
Retroactively, the art world has been mourning the loss of the legend, with De Niro, Pacino, Adam Sandler, Jamie Lee Curtis, Walton Goggins, Francis Ford Coppola and more penning tributes to Duvall on social media.
Beyond Tender Mercies, which Duvall portrays an aging country music star, he also made an appearance in Waylon Jennings’ 37-minute, long-form music video called Waylon Jennings America.
Duvall’s ties to country music don’t stop at Waylon, however. Tim McGraw also developed a long-lasting friendship with the late legend, thanks to the time spent together on the set of Four Christmases. Of course, this shouldn’t come as a surprise given the fact that the “Live Like You Were Dying” singer has paved an acting career for himself, starring in The Blind Side, Friday Night Lights and most notably, the Yellowstone prequel, 1883.
In an Instagram post last night, McGraw would pen a touching tribute to Duvall. In the caption, he’d note how he’d keep in close contact with the Apocalypse Now star, frequently talking about various films, his role in 1883 and their shared love for Tender Mercies. Additionally, McGraw would call Duvall an “incredible talent’ before closing the reflection with a simple, “go rest high, my friend.”
“One of the all-time greats in my opinion has passed on. I will never forget my time with him on set and our text messages over the last few years about movies, “1883” and every time “Tender Mercies“ was on on tv, I would text him and say “I’m watching it again”! One of my prized possessions is a book of screenplays by Horton Foote that I got in the mail around 6 months ago with a beautiful sentiment and autograph that I will keep to myself. An incredible talent, one that doesn’t come along that often. We will miss him and celebrate his life by watching all the great films he made through the years, go rest high my friend.”
It’s hard to truly state the impact Duvall had on the world of film and television. Starring in what can only be described generation-defining movies across a wide array of different genres, Duvall carved out a path as an actor few can ever even dream of.
RIP to the late legend.
