The first “Golden Bachelor” was Gerry Turner, a widowed, retired restaurateur from Hudson, Indiana. The season ended with him proposing to Theresa Nist, with their wedding serving as the basis of a live ABC special in January 2024. However, the two divorced three months later.

Turner recently opened up about the fallout of the relationship in his upcoming memoir, Golden Years. During this share, he revealed that what happened ended up taking him to dark places.

According to an excerpt shared by TMZ, Gerry wrote that the negative reaction he got following the divorce hit him hard. He shared, “One night, while I was lying in bed and staring at the ceiling, it all became too much, and for the briefest moment, I thought about putting a gun to my head.”

Turner explained he always had a “marathon mentality.” This meant he would always push through pain, feeling it would eventually pass. However, he admitted that the divorce fallout felt endless.

Gerry Turner Admitted In His Memoir That These Feelings Were Unusual For Him

However, Gerry noted something that helped him overcome these dark thoughts. He realized he needed to be there for his daughters, Jenny and Angie, fearing what he would put them through. He added he didn’t just want to die but disappear altogether.

Turner shared he was tempted to try less drastic actions, noting, “I dreamed of renting a room in some remote part of Alaska no one had ever heard of and not coming out for a month.” This all came as a shock to him, noting, he “had never been the depressed type.”

Turner also shared his feeling that Theresa broke a pact they made to protect each other from fake headlines. As he explained, he was upset by her making a statement days following the fallout.

That said, Turner promised discussions of his reality TV fame, his heartbreak, and the lessons he learned in his upcoming memoir. Golden Years is expected for release on November 4, 2025.
